Bloomfield • The Boardwalk 248.855.2240 International School Plans Arts Middle School Option Cantor Stephen Dubov, spiritual leader of Congregation Chaye.Olam, and former State Sen. Jack Faxon, founder and headmaster of the International School in Farmington Hills, have entered into a new part- nership. They - are planning to offer an arts- enriched cur- riculum in a private set- ting in the Farmington- Novi area for Cantor Dubov talented local middle- school-aged youth, start- ing in sixth grade. Specialized programs will be available in instru- mental music, vocal music, dance, visual arts Jack Faxon and perform- ing arts. Cantor Dubov envisions an arts academy with three performance halls, concert hall, theater-in-the- round, lecture halls, practice rooms and classrooms. "We want to provide a secure environment for youth who are nat- urally creative and artistically gift- ed," said the cantor, who also is founder and conductor of the Kidz Klez Band of Michigan. "It has been proven that when stu- dents are blended with peers pos- sessing similar gifts, the child and the 'artist in the child' can flourish," Cantor Dubov said. Funding for the proposed 35-acre facility in Oakland County is being sought from arts foundations, cor- porations and private individuals. Until then, the International School, with its college-preparatory, academ- ic program' already in place, will accommodate students wanting to begin an arts-directed curriculum immediately. At the International School, Faxon envisions a unique middle-school- arts component "in partnership with our already established foreign-lan- guage tradition" of more than 34 years. Cantor Dubov, a certified teacher, will be administrator of the arts at the future school. A member of the Screen Actors Guild, Actors Equity and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, he has performed on Broadway and in tele- vision and films. The new middle school of arts and foreign languages will start accepting students in January for classes in September. Resumes are being accepted now for qualified teaching artists and musicians. An after-school arts program open to the community begins in January at the International School. Auditions and interviews may be arranged for prospective students by calling (248) 752-6668.
