Marc Shulman's Web Site Compatible For Visually Impaired A Web site capable of being surfed by visually impaired and even blind individuals has been developed for State Rep. Marc Shulman, R-39th District. "It is refreshing to see a legislator who addresses all of his constituents, not just the majority," said Barbara Thomas of West Bloomfield, a Michigan Commission for the Blind member. "Being visually impaired myself, I am impressed with Rep. Shulman's desire to address the accessibility issue for the visually impaired and blind." "We took my site and repro- grammed it so that my visually impaired constituents can keep up with what's going on in Lansing," said Shulman of West Bloomfield. His dis- trict includes Keego HarbOr, the City of Orchard Lake Village and Commerce and West Bloomfield townships. Urbanideas.com of Royal Oak devel- oped Shulman's site to be compatible with a screen-reading software pro- gram called JAWS, created by Freedom Scientific of Florida. Sighted people surf the Web using a mouse. When those who are blind or have impaired vision surf the Web and arrive at a page that interests them, they use the tab and arrow keys to Marc Shulman State of Michigan Representative move from one element on the page to the next. "That's where JAWS comes in," Shulman said. "If the blind or visually impaired person has JAWS and they tab to an element on the page, such as a picture, JAWS will read them a description that has been pro- grammed-in on the photograph." For example, he said, a sighted per- son may see a photograph of hundreds of people walking down the street. "Urbanideas.com would have pro- grammed the page so that JAWS would say aloud, 'This is a photograph of the Martin Luther King Day Walk down Orchard Lake Road in West Bloomfield. Hundreds of people turned out for the walk.'" Shulman's business cards are in regu- lar print and Braille, making the Web site change a natural step to advocating more for people with disabilities, he said. Shulman plans to make JAWS avail- able through the West Bloomfield Township Library. Blind or visually impaired users would be able to access Shulman's site or any site built in com- pliance with government regulations that works with JAWS.
