Evidence? President John Adams, who wrote: "In spite of Voltaire [the 18th-century French intellectual and blatant anti-Semite] ... I will insist that the Hebrews have done more to civi- lize men than any other nation." And Theodore Roosevelt, who, when he was police commissioner of New York City in 1895, ridiculed an anti- Semitic preacher from Berlin by send- ing 40 Jewish policemen to protect him during his stay in the Big Apple. And the fiveAmerican Jews who have won the Nobel Prize in literature and peace — Henry Kissinger, Elie Wiesel, Saul Bellow, Isaac Bashevis Singer and Joseph Brodsky — all immigrants to the U.S. But what makes this book stand out are its pullouts — for example, a tiny copy of the letter, in its own teeny- weeny envelope, that President George Washington sent to the Jewish com- munity of Newport, R.I., in 1790 assuring its members of equal rights in America. Or, an equally small daily prayer book that a German Jewish woman carried with her across the ocean to a new life in 1875. Then, there's an attachment, "Take a Guess at 'Who' was 'Who,'" permit- ting readers to guess who Arthur Arshawsky, Joan Molinsky and Eugene Orowitz, among others, became after they changed their names (bandleader Artie Shaw, comedienne Joan Rivers and actor Michael Landon). What did the song say , — "You've got to have a gimmick." But $29.95 for a 29-page coffee- table book full of gimmicks — I don't think so. — Aaron Leibel Washington Jewish Week 15% I I I I I TOTAL FOOD BILL • GOOD ANYTIME expires November 29, 2002 2000 Town Center, Suite 98 10V2Mile on Evergreen Road (248) 358-1911 No sharing/No discounts on specials tL NEW HOURS: Mon. - Fri 7-9 • Sat 7-8 http://www.musashi-intl.co m 21754 W. 11 MILE RD. • HARVARD ROW • 248-352-4940 FAX: 352-9393 Best sentation...14 14; Extremely tasty... excellent pre beautiful & very flavorsome."
