hallucinations', paranoia, poor jiidgenen depression, feelings of worthlessness, delusions, "Of course people ask what I think about being part of the Nativity scene [the final act of the two-hour show], Kaufman says during a promotional tour to Detroit. "I just tell them I'm honored to be a Radio City Rockette. They started out as dancers in between movies at Radio City Music Hall, so when I think about it, I separate out the religious aspects of the show and just focus on my dancing because that's what I love to do." And love it they must, because being a Rockette is not quite as glamorous as it looks. After weeks of rehearsal, the girls perform in two to four shows a day, six days a week. For Bonich, the granddaughter of Delores and Seymour (Shep) Schuldinger of Oak Park, there will be an additional challenge. This will be her first time away from her family. "I'm a little scared to leave, but I know I'll be fine when I get there," she says. "Three months is a long time for me, but my boyfriend will come up a few times, my parents will come up." 'Are you kidding? We'll be there for the first show," Sheri Bonich says with enthusiasm. "We'll be [in Branson for] Thanksgiving and we'll be in Phoenix around Christmas time. We'll proba- bly be there too much!" It's a dream come true for the entire family and a dream in the making for little girls who will fill Detroit's Fox Theatre and nine other venues around the country this season. And say both this year's Jewish Rockettes, it's a dream every dancer should hold on to. "It doesn't matter where you study as long as you get good training," Kaufman says. "I've performed with several girls who studied at very small dance stu- dios in little Anytown, U.S.A., and now they're Radio City Rockettes just like I am, and I went to a dance studio with 2,000 students." Here in metro Detroit, more than half a dozen dancers from Julianna's Academy of Dance have gone on to become Rockettes, each of them set- ting the stage for Erin's debut and a reminder of what owner Julianna Pirpinelli has always told her students: "Never give up on your dreams." ❑ The 2002 edition of The Radio Cite Christmas Spectacular will be at Detroit's Fox Theatre from Nov. 29-Dec. 28, with 54 performances. Tickets range in price from $17.50-$59.50.
