Dorothy & Peter Brown Jewish Community Adult Day Care Program and Jewish Resource Center for Dementia Care PRESENT Taking Care of Yourself A WORKSHOP FOR FAMILY CAREGIVERS more and more fast foods and soft drinks. And kids get snack-fed so they're not hungry for real meals. JN: One day you read coffee is good for you, the next day, it's bad. How do you choose what to write? Brody: We [the New York Times] have to cover the news because we're a newspaper. But I write a column that allows me to stand back from the immediacy of the news and put it into perspective. Like coffee. Let's say a study links coffee to pancreatic cancer. Even if the study is published in a peer review journal, I didn't write that story because I did a lot of work on the biology of coffee and caffeine and I found no evidence that coffee is linked to cancer. [Brody suggests that coffee drinkers tended to be smokers, and pancreatic cancer is related to smoking — but not necessarily to coffee.] I have a mantra about how to judge a story: One study does not a fact make. JN: What will your talk focus on in Detroit? Brody: I'll emphasize that doctors don't keep you healthy, only you can keep you healthy ... And if you're not physically active, you can't be a fully healthy person. JN: How do you keep healthy? Brody: I'm not a fanatic. My diet is mostly low fat with high vegetables and lean protein. [Brody also said she eats treats on occasion and eats out infrequently.] THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2002 7:00 TO 9:00 p.m. JEWISH FEDERATION OF *METRO DETROIT 6735 Telegraph Road 7 - 8 p.m. CARING FOR THE CAREGIVER — PREVENTING BURNOUT Albert Bayer, MD MAINTAINING COGNITIVE VITALITY, Richard Trosch, MD OBTAINING HELP FROM COMMUNITY RESOURCES, Mindi Silver-Weiss, MSW 8 9 p.m. PANEL DISCUSSION WITH CAREGIVERS - Pearlena Bodzin — Moderator Sylvia Goodman, Zena Kramer, Robert Tell • Workshop is presented free of charge • Hand-outs about community resources will be provided • Light refreshments will be served TO REGISTER, PLEASE CALL BARBARA ADLER AT 248/559-5000, EXT. 705 OR e-mail badler@jvsdet.org JVS Realizing life's potential JN: What's important for the com- munity to do about health? Brody: It's important that people work on a societal level to promote physical activity. Make sure malls are open [for walkers] ... and that there are local-wide health facilities that have programs that encourage all ages and all degrees in fitness to work out.
