Hannah Green lives a nice life in Holly Springs, Miss. Her father and two oldest brothers are fighting in the Civil War. Still, Hannah has great friends and is a happy go- lucky girl. One day, Hannah's sister Joanna falls in love with a Union soldier. He warns them about what will happen when the infamous Order No. 11, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's law forcing Jews to evacuate their homes supposedly for violating trade laws, is implemented. Hannah and her family leave their home. This is the beginning of a challenging journey — including the loss of their slaves (when President Abraham Lincoln abolish- es slavery), illness and concern for the fate of the rest of the family. Are Hannah's father and brothers still alive? Will they ever return? And will • the family ever be able to make it back to their beloved home in Mississippi? Written for young readers (about ages 10-14) The War Within is inter- esting enough because it teaches chil- dren about a bit of unknown history, and because it shows the way that Hannah learns to reconsider slavery. She grew up with slavery, it seemed normal enough, but over time she comes to question what right a human being has to "own" another. Don't look for too much positive Jewish content here, though. At one point, Hannah even says, "I was just glad that Ma and Pa did not strictly observe the Sabbath or we might not be allowed to go to a dance on Friday night." (Pretty strange comment for a book that supposedly is about teaching the value of tolerance.) Also, be prepared for a bit of a lecture at the beginning in the form of the author's note. "What became the central question for me as I wrote this book was: How do we escape from the prisons that are our minds? We are brought up a certain way, with certain values ... As we grow up we are often encouraged to `think for ourselves.' But how do we do that if we are so used to thinking in a certain way that we do not even realize we are doing it?" (and on and on and on). ❑ NEW-CAR PRICE NOT INCLUDED. 2 • ANNUAL PERCENTAGE RATE* FOR TERMS UP TO 66 MONTHS. 66 MONTHLY PAYMENTS OF $16.42 ON APPROVED CREDIT PER $1,000 BORROWED.
