Of Times Past: Grandmother to
Grandchild by Arlene Chavel and
Sara Farkas. Targum; $25.95).

What a treasure.
Of Times Past is a
wonder of a book,
created for grand-
mothers to write
for their grand-
children. _
Each page
allows the writer
to focus on a piece
of family life and
history.
Sometimes it's
purely factual
information: a
great-grandfather's
name and place of
birth, a parent's
weight when she
was born. But
more often than
not, the pages
offer loving infor-
mation every child
wants to know but often doesn't, or
doesn't ask for until it's too late.

There are places for writing down
family stories, recipes and tradi-
tions. Pages offer opportunities to
write about family vacations and
lifecycle events (are you one of those
embarrassed because you always for-
get the date of your grandparents'
yahrtzeits (anniversary of death)?
Here's a place to write it down.
A wonderful section in this book
also asks a grandmother to write
about "Changes in Lifestyles." What
home appliances were used when
she was a girl, and what is popular
these days? What toys were her
favorites long ago? What was it like
for the writer
when the State of
Israel was estab-
lished?
There also are
pages, "About
You, My
Grandchild," that
are certain to be
much loved both
by the writer and
the recipient.
