M oishe and Oishe Parakeet could have been called Tweedledee and Tweedledum if it weren't for Lillian Tabak. When the two birds arrived recently at the Lillian and Samuel Hechtman Jewish Apartments in West Bloomfield, they were nameless. So, Esther Winer, community-outreach coordinator for the West Bloomfield- based Jewish Apartments and Services who had pur- chased the birds, organized a contest. After reviewing 18 entries by Hechtman SHELLI residents, Tabak's was LIEBMAN chosen the winner by Tim Elliott, JAS devel- DORFMAN opment director. Tabak, StaIT Writer who won a gift certifi- cate donated by JAS Friends and Family Society for her winning entry, said "Moishe" and "Oishe" "just popped into my head" as names for the birds she describes as "cute and chirpy." Winer said the parakeets "are cared for by various residents who stop by and talk to them daily." A welcome addition to the facility, she said the birds came to Hechtman after "resi- dents requested another mascot besides Queenie, their lovable dog."
