The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit's second annual Women's Day
of Learning will be 12:45-5 p.m.
Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Irving and Betty
Laker Education and Youth Complex
of Shaarey Zedek, 2075 Walnut Lake
Road, West Bloomfield.
The program is titled "Here & Now:
'Listening to the Past — Planning the
Future." The featured speaker will be
Rivy Poupko Kletenik, the director of
Jewish. Education Services for the
Jewish Education Council of the
Jewish Federation of Seattle. Her topic
will be "The Jewish Body: Conflict of
Interest." Kletenik has lectured on
Jewish texts, Jewish law and history.
She spent the past year in Israel, study-
ing at the Hebrew University, as a
Melton Senior Educator Fellow.
The workshops include Rabbi
Lauren Berkun speaking on "Women
and Sexual Ethics;" Ruth Bergman on
,"The HaNaH Mitzvot: Understanding
Traditional Women's Mitzvot in the
Modern World;" Rabbi Amy Bolton
on "Rosh Chodesh;" Fran Pearlman on
"Making a Plan: My Jewish Life in
2010;" Harlene Appelman on
"Transmitting Tradition from
Generation to Generation;" Rabbi
Marla Hornsten on "The Value of
Jewish Memory;" Rena Spolter on
"Women in Prayer;" Tali Sobol on
"Living a Life of Faith in the 21st
Century;" and Rabbi Tamara Kolton
on "From Asherah to Rabbi: A Journey
of 4,000 Years."
Event sponsors are the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit,
Federation's Alliance for Jewish
Education, the Agency for Jewish
Education, the Hermelin-Davidson
Center for Congregational Excellence,
Eilu v'Eilu, the Jewish Theological
Seminary, the Florence Melton Mini
School and SAJE.
Ellen Labes chairs the steering com-
mittee, assisted by Arline Gould,
Roberta Madorsky, Carol Maisels, Beth
Ra.z, Baylee Shulman, Donna Sklar,
Rena Spolter, Jordana Weiss and Marla
Zwas.
The $18 fee will admit one to the
keynote speaker, a choice of two work-
shops and a mid-afternoon snack; a
kosher box lunch is available for an
additional $12. The reservation dead-
line is Dec. 3.
