He graduated with honors from the University of Michigan and Yale University School of Medicine. Specializing in general surgery, he trained at Grace-New Haven Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital (New York), Wayne State University School of Medicine, and the former Sinai Hospital (Detroit). He served in the United States Army as Captain in the medical corps. He was a member of numerous medical and surgical societies and served on the initial advisory board of Gilda's Club. He was recently honored on becoming a Master Mason, having completed 50 years. Dr. Neufeld enjoyed teaching students and residents, for which he received numerous awards. He cared for the Detroit community for over 40 years helping to heal both body and soul of his many patients. Any person whom he cared for received not only the highest medical care but also genuine, kind and gentle compassion that only someone with a special gift can provide. A colleague, Dr. Eduardo Phillips, stated that "He listened to the mute and he talked to the deaf, providing guidance, advice and solace to those who were fortunate enough to have him as part of their life. He was a modest, unassuming giant of a man who never sought but reached the highest level of humanity." Dr. Neufeld was the loving husband of Dorothy for 50 years and proud father of Sally (Mark) Engle, and James. (Anna) Neufeld who fondly referred to him as "Pops." He was blessed with four grandchildren: Kelsey Engle, Dylan, Tyler and Hally Neufeld. He is also survived by his loving sister Arlene (Sheldon) Singer. Dr. Neufeld died at home Tuesday, October 17th at age 72. mumzik,.a177:7477 When Saying You're Sorry Is Not Enough Say It Best With A SHIVA TRAY or BASKET By MARIAN ROBERTS, 92, of West Bloomfield, died Oct. 28, 2002.
