When she is not using it to perform with Mikveh, the trum- peter accepts engagements with both klezmer and classical groups. The instrumentalist regularly appears with her mother, klezmer drummer Elaine Hoffman Watts, with whom she has made the CD I Remember Klezmer, and she has recorded and performed with Hankus Netsky of the Klezmer Conservatory Band and Frank London's Der Shikere Kapelye. Classically trained at the St. Louis Conservatory of Music and Temple University in Philadelphia, Hoffman has composed for the films Breath and A Joyful Noise. 'All of the Mikveh members have songs in which they are individually featured," says Hoffman, who traces her musical heritage to her great- grandfather, Ukraine bandleader Joseph Hoffman. "We also will have some songs recently added to our repertoire." Violinist Alicia Svigals, founder of the Jewish roots group The Klezmatics, launched Mikveh. She was the one asked to assemble the "V-Day" band by Ensler. Svigals' early choice for the group was Cooper, director of the Center for Cultural Jewish Life at Workmen's Circle in New York City and a stage and recording artist with independent projects. Svigals, who has appeared in Michigan several times, has worked as a violinist and composer with Itzhak Perlman, the Kronos Quartet and playwright Tony Kushner, who wrote lyrics about the mysticism of creation for "Heart of the World," her compo- sition on the Mikveh CD. Other Mikveh members are accor- dionist Lauren Brody and double bassist Nicki Parrott. Brody, who also performs with Bulgarian gypsy saxophonist Yuri Yunakov, is an alumna of the pioneer- ing klezmer revival band Kapelye, with whom she toured and recorded for 10 years. A Yiddish singer who specializes in the traditional music of Bulgaria and Macedonia, the accordionist has won a series of grants to conduct research on early folk-music recordings in Bulgaria. Parrott, part of the jazz scene in New York and her native Australia, has per- formed with Doc Cheatham, Clark Terry and the all-women big band DIVA. "We love each opportunity to enter- tain and hope the music touches everyone," Hoffman says. "We have a program honed from our experiences at many venues." 111 Mikveh performs 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. $151$10 JCC mem- bers.
