LETTERS LETTERS from page 6 [Jonathan] Singer of Seattle [Temple Beth Ahm], perhaps I am "culturally frozen." But, I would guess that the lion's share of Reform-affiliated Jews would agree with me and I urge them to voice their embarrassment to the institu- tions involved. Michael Hauser Oak Park Banning Nimoy Shows Cowardice and dance. Your editorial and accompanying article ("The Art Of Compromise," Nov. 1, page 37; "Community Consensus, Nov. 1, page 24) imply that the art [in Nimoy's new book] was "viewed as offensive to the community in general — not individual Jewish factions." I don't believe this to be the case and am thoroughly disappointed at the cowardice of our "community leaders. Historically, it was governments the Jewish people feared; now it seems our freedom of expression is being cur- tailed from our own fear of being politically incorrect. We are allowing a fundamentalist faction to determine •what is obscene or not. This is not how I want to be represented by my [Jewish] community. Now that the Orthodox community has managed to ban Mr. Nimoy's book [from the Jewish Book Fair], what's next? Or should I just look for the )3 I find it difficult to believe that such noble institutions as the Jewish Community Center, the Jewish Federation and the Detroit Jewish News have become the pawns of community zealots who have chosen [author] Mr. [Leonard] Nimoy to represent their ), new idea of "degenerate art. The raison d'etre of the institutions is for the betterment and enlightenment of the Detroit Jewish community through education, art, music, theater bonfire emanating from Maple and Drake? Jeremy Zeltzer Northville Jews Should Unite Behind Israel I felt repulsed and nauseous reading the article by Susannah Heschel ("College Ad Missed The Point," Oct. 18, page 42). Jews are being slaughtered in Israel constantly by the Palestinians, and she is expressing her hatred for Ariel Sharon. She is fighting battles with Jews who do not agree with her left-wing, liberal views. The incitement against Israel by the Palestinians and the Arab countries has reached unbelievable proportions. The anti-Semitic cartoons in the Arab press are unabated and have not been seen in the world since Hitler and Goebbels, and she is concerned about Sharon vio- lating human rights. - We must stop this Jewish disease of divisiveness. The Second Temple was destroyed because two Jews in Jerusalem, Kamtze and Bar Kamtze, were enemies of each other. The Israelis are dying and bleeding daily. Any Jew who wants to get involved with Israel's foreign policy or defense should move to Israel, fight and bleed with them. Jews must uncondi- tionally support Israel for many reasons; but most importantly, if some Hitler will rise again in the world, Israel is the only country that will give endangered Jews refuge and not fight amongst themselves. With the exception of the United States, the whole world is against Israel. Jews should not fight against them- selves. It hurts Israel and it gives comfort to its enemies. As expected, the Jewish News is leading our community in sup- port of Israel. I am surprised that an arti- cle like this is given a platform in the Jewish News. Jeffrey J.
