Inspired by a desire to get to the heart
of Abraham, Feller has helped form
grassroots discussion groups —
Abraham Salons — during the past year.
"The Abraham Salons," Feiler
explains, "grew out of the fact that
hundreds of Jewish and Christian
interfaith discussion groups popped
up entirely spontaneously around

Walking the Bible.
"I wanted to do something other than
have people buy my book. My publish-
er and I came up with the idea to give
people a packet containing biblical and
koranic passages for discussions that can
help them do a small part to help heal
the breach in the world."
At last count, Abraham Salons were
being held in 28 states and in
Washington, D.C. A session will be aired
on the NBC television show 1Vightline.

Sons Of Abraham

Feiler's most hard-to-forget experience
while researching the book was also
his most instructive.
In Hebron he stood before the
tombs of Abraham and Sarah and
pulled out his Bible.
"I read this haunting but overlooked
passage in Genesis: 25," he recalls,
"where Isaac and Ishmael have been
rivals since before they were born.
Now they are leaders of opposing

nations. And they come to stand side
by side to bury their father."
What most interests Feiler about the
passage is not the words of the text —
but what remains unsaid.
• "It doesn't say they hugged and had
a meal and lived happily ever after. It
just says that they stood side by side,"
he says.
"Remember Abraham tried to kill
both of them. If they can forgive him
and forgive each other, then that is a
model for all of us today."
It is a hard sell Feiler puts to his
readers — proposing that we look past
the texts back to an Abraham who
predates the very monotheistic reli-
gions set in motion by his utter faith
in God.
If there is one message that comes
from the author's quest for the histori-
cal, religious and symbolic Abraham,
it is one of inclusivity.
Abraham belongs to us all.

Bruce Feiler speaks 8 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 10, at the Jewish
