you Don't Have To Go Downtown to have stepped up as sponsors of Book Fair and its author talks. Says Schonberger, "We are indebted to our sponsoring organizations as well as the patrons and donors and corpo- rate sponsors who help us not only continue Book Fair as it is but to expand it as well." Assisting Schonberger in the massive undertaking are second-year co-chairs Sandy Stark and Teri Sinkoff, two enthusiastic leaders who have come up through Book Fair ranks. They work with "a huge cadre" of volunteers beyond the steering corn- mittee, Stark says, singling out the peo- ple "who pick up our authors and those who spend time on the floor helping people find the right books." She says, "The entire JCC staff is involved in one way or another and they are terrific to work with." Her favorite time is when the books start arriving from the publishers. "There are always treasures coming out of the boxes," says Stark. "Our biggest problem is that we are big readers and we'd probably be more efficient if we didn't take time to enjoy what we've ordered." For Sinkoff, a "voracious reader," getting to attend the Book Expo in New York is a real perli and being able to speak with authors and publishers is particularly exciting. "Volunteering for Book Fair is differ- ent from my other volunteering," she says. "We create something new every year. Each year has its own personali- Meet The Authors As in the past, this year's Book Fair will present a wide range of authors in a variety of genres and topics. On the political front, Michael Oren's Six Days of War: June 1967 and the Making of the Modern Middle East traces the ongoing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians back to that short but transforming conflict. Nationally syndicated radio interviewer Leon Charney will discuss his conver- sations with statesmen, journalists and others from his newest book, The Charney Report: Confronting the Israeli- Arab Conflict. Closer to home, The Terrorist Next Door: The Militia Movement and the Radical Right by Daniel Levitas examines the very real and dangerous threat within our own nation. The Holocaust continues to influ- ence writers; three authors will speak on the topic during Book Fair. University of Michigan Professor Get the zi p! Sidney Bolkosky's Searching for Meaning in the Holocaust challenges the usual collection of platitudes about the lessons or meanings one can draw from the Holocaust. In Displaced Persons, Russian-born Joseph Berger shares his account of his family's immigration from Eastern Europe to America when he was 5 years old, and how its mem- bers rebuilt their lives in a new coun- try. Bryan Mark Rigg's Hitler's Jewish Soldiers: The Untold Story of Nazi Racial Laws and Men of Jewish Descent in the German Military is a book on a complicated topic, examining the conundrum Hitler faced on his mur- derous road to "racial purity." Offering a broader historical perspec- tive is Hasia Diner's Her Works Praise Her: A History of Jewish Women in America, which provides a colorful account of Jewish women in America from 1654 to the turn of the 21st cen- tury. In Faith and Fate, Rabbi Beryl Wein writes his fourth in a series of history books; this volume deals with the history of the Jews during the tur- bulent 20th century. Interest in Jewish spirituality contin- ues to run high. In their book Searching for Meaning in Midrash: Lessons for Everyday Living, Rabbis Michael Katz and Gershon Schwartz explore more than 50 midrashim and the lessons that can be drawn from them. The God. Book: A Necessarily Incomplete Look at the Essence Of God by Temple Israel Rabbi Paul Yedwab uses both English and Hebrew sources, as well as primary texts, to encourage creative thinking regarding the concept of God. The catchily titled From Fear to Eternity by A. Lefkowitz is written as a conversation between 'Andy" and "Avi," who discuss 10 steps to achiev- ing the benefits of living a life accord- ing to Torah. In One People, Two Worlds, Reform Rabbi Ammiel Hirsch and Orthodox Rabbi Yosef Reinman bring their vastly different approaches and beliefs to aspects of Judaism and the Jewish world. Back for what should be another successful event, author Yitta Halberstam, co-author with Judith Leventhal of their latest book, Small Miracles for the Jewish Heart, returns to discuss the often surprising and unex- plained vignettes of everyday people's lives.
