Jewish National Fun will hold its annual Green Sunday Phone-A-Thon on November 24, 2002 Beth Shalom Hosts An Israeli Evening A celebration of Israeli life and cul- ture is planned for people of all ages Sunday, Nov. 17, at Congregation Beth Shalom. Starting with a traditional Israeli buffet at 6 p.m., Israeli dancing will follow. Shelly Komer Jackier and Avi Zechory will demonstrate and instruct adults. Beth Shalom's cultural commis- sion is sponsoring the event, which is open to the community. The fee for the evening is $13 for adults, $6.50 for children and free for those younger than 3. Emanu-El Marks 50th Anniversary Temple Emanu-El celebrated its 50th anniversary at a dinner Oct. 12. The occasion culminated a year of events commemorating the success of the Oak Park Reform temple. The evening included a Havdalah service written and performed by Michael HarPaz and an original musical revue by the Temple Emanu-El Players. Series Focus — Study Of Israel Community educator Michael Weiss will lead a six-part Sunday morning adult Jewish study series titled "Israel in Text and Tradition," spon- sored by Eilu v'Eilu and hosted by Congregation Shaarey Zedek Southfield. Study sessions will take place 10- 11:30 a.m. Nov. 3, 10, 17, 24, Dec. 8 and 15. The series is designed to introduce adult learners to tradi- tional views on the role of the Land of Israel in Jewish life as expressed in the great literary works of the Jewish tradition. Each 90-minute session is self- contained and can be attended sepa- rately. There is no charge, and pre- registration is not necessary. No knowledge of Hebrew is nec- essary. For information, call Dr. Mitch Parker, (248) 593-3490. `Power' Series At B'nai Moshe Congregation B'nai Moshe's monthly adult Jewish learning series, "The Power of Seven," which showcases guest scholars in an in-depth seminar format designed to appeal to Jewish learners throughout the commu- nity, will continue 7:30-9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, with a shiur (discourse) by Conservative com- munity scholar-in-residence Rabbi David Lazar. His topic will be "Long Before Vampires: Garlic in the Jewish Tradition." Tuition is $10 ($8 for B'nai Moshe members). Pre-reg- istration is encouraged, but stu- dents also may register at the door. No knowledge of Hebrew is necessary. The next "Power of Seven" shiur will take place during Chanukah, on Monday, Dec. 2, and will feature community edu- cator and Bible scholar Eric Grossman. His topic will be "Theology in 3-D: The Magic, Mystery and Menorah of the Ancient Temple." Advance regis- tration is encouraged but not required. Each session is self- contained and can be attended independently. B'nai Moshe is also offering a number of ongoing, weekly class- es this semester, which new stu- dents are welcome to join. A new Shabbat morning early- bird Torah study group meets 8:45-9:30 a.m. on Shabbat mornings, led by community educator Barry V. Levine. As this is a Shabbat study series, there is no charge; however, contribu- tions to the Ruth Rosenberg Albert Adult Education Fund, which is underwriting the series, are welcome. Pre-registration is encouraged (Shabbat attire). Rabbi Elliot Pachter leads the class "Swimming in the Sea of Talmud," using the textbook ($20) by Rabbis Michael Katz and Gershon Schwartz, 10-11 a.m. Sundays in the synagogue's library-minyan room.
