‘THE MIKVAH PROJECT'

c

harles Wiese, who was
born in Detroit, is the cre-
ative consultant for "The
Mikvah Project," a touring photo
and text exhibit to be shown Nov.
7-Dec. 15 at the Janice Charach
Epstein Gallery in West
Bloomfield. He's also the husband
of Janice Rubin, the photogra-
pher at the heart of the exhibit he
designed.
"The Mikvah Project," drawn
from the book of the same name,
documents a return to the ritual
bath and personal discoveries that
resulted from the process. Besides
Rubin's photos, there is text by
Leah Lax, a writer and teacher in
Texas, where the project was
completed.
"The pictures are really beautiful-
ly done with blue tones and are not
offensive in any way," says Sylvia
Nelson, director of the Janice
Charach Epstein Gallery. "Models
were used to show how the mikvah
is used as a way of relaxing and
finding spiritual renewal."
The exhibit begins with under-
water photos that capture the

"Nothing you can hide, not orn
yourself and not from God:"

intimate, sensual, enigmatic
nature of the ages-old rite. It con-
tinues with a series of emotionally
charged, anonymous portraits of
interview subjects that do not
reveal faces but reveal something
about their lives.
The images, paired with inter-
views about feminist issues, were
first shown as part of the
Houston FotoFest 2000.
Rubin and Lax will be in town
for the opening reception, start-
ing at 7 p.m. Thursday, NOV. 7,
when there will be a panel discus-
sion titled "Mikvah - A Source
of Spiritual Renewal."
The panel includes Rabbi Lauren
Berkun, Dr. Ruth Lerman of the

Beaumont Hospital Breast Center
and Rachel Yoskoi.vitz, director of
the Center for Jewish Healing.
"I became interested in explor-
ing the mikvah at a time when I •
felt spiritually vulnerable," says
Rubin, whose work has appeared
in Newsweek, Town and Country
and Fortune magazines. "In my
own tradition, I found a ritual
that offered an opportunity for
emotional cleansing and spiritual
transformation."
- Suzanne Chessler

The Mikvah Project will be
shown Nov. 7-Dec. 15 at the
Janice Charach Epstein
Gallery in the Jewish
Community Center in West
Bloomfield. A panel discus-
sion will be held 7 p.m.
Thursday, Nov. 7, as part of
the 51st Annual Jewish Book
Fair. Gallery hours are 11
a.m.-4 p.m. Sundays, 10 a.m.-
5 p.m. Mondays-Wednesdays
and 10 a.m.-7 p.m.
Thursdays. (248) 432-5579.
