The Deeds Of Jonathan Pollard Natick, Mass. 11 across our nation, plans were made to honor Sept. 11, 2001, with solemn reminders of the suicide bomber attacks upon a friendly nation in New York City and Washington, D.C., that resulted in the loss of thousands of lives. Since that fateful day, a wave of patriotism has resurfaced in our country, particularly, with the dis- playing of the American flag both at home and at businesses. After the tragedy that struck our country, we were in a state of war in Afghanistan and Pakistan — with our military on the ground and in the air. All the while, our policing agents have been combino-b the world seeking out terrorists and cit- izens at home are cooperating in every direction. Yet, with that sensitive date of Sept. 11 upon us, the Detroit Jewish News chose to feature on the cover of the Aug. 16, 2002 issue, plus a four-page spread, the Jonathan Jay Pollard espionage case — the Jewish spy and traitor who is amongst us. The timing here was absolutely the worst and if you wonder, at times, what creates anti-Semitism, it is right here and right now. Whilst our neighbors are waving the American flag, the Detroit Jewish News is waving a convicted Jewish A Col. During 125 years of brutal conquest, Islam spread from the Indus to the Atlantic and from Kashmir to upper Egypt and the borders of China. H.G. Wells tells of how "the armies of Islam were advancing triumphantly in the conquest of the world." By 750, Islam not only was in con- trol of Spain, but also dominant in Persia, Armenia and Eastern Europe. The threat to Europe ended only in the 13th century, when the Christians gradually re-conquered Spain and thrust the Muslims back into North Africa. Osama bin Laden is only one indi- vidual who has emerged as a figure- spy in their faces and reminding their readers of a black and humili- ating event that befell the Jewish population here in the United States over 15 years ago. James Besser's two-page spread in the Aug. 16 issue, ("The Spy In The Shadows," page 14) is an accumula- tion of fluff, opinions, conjectures and criticism, particularly of [for- mer U.S. Defense Secretary] Caspar Weinberger and [Federal] Judge Aubrey Robinson, Pollard's trial judge. Besser has resorted to the old game of finger pointing and looking for a fall guy. There isn't one single word regarding the Pollard espi- onage case, nothing about the fed- eral charges against him, nothing about the 1,100 classified docu- ments that were compromised by Pollard, nothing about Pollard going on the Israeli payroll and col- lecting over $150,000, mostly in cash. Besser further quoted Jerome Chanes, the National Jewish Community Relations Advisory Council director, that for "an increasingly vocal right wing in Israel and their Jewish supporters in America," there's "confirmation of their belief that U.S. friendship for Israel was mostly a sham." All through the espionage, the Israeli government has been collecting a $3 billion largesse that was award- ed, initially, in 1979. Edwin Black's one-and-a-half page' spread, "The Case Against Pollard" (Aug. 16, page 16), is more $29,000. This included finger pointing. Muslim spokesmen today make no secret of their ultimate aim, to con- quer the West and impose the Islamic faith on the world. Authentic quotations are numerous: "We shall export our revolution to the whole world until the cry Allah Akbar' resounds over the whole world ... Islam will be victorious in all the countries of the world..." "Britain must be turned into the first Islamic state in a new world order..." "Oh, peoples of the West, we say to you, we are the masters of the world..." "The annihilation of the infidel is a divine decree ... Muslims must not wait passively for the divine decree to just happen." There are many, many more utter- ances like these. Does no one pay heed? It is not only Christian Europe and America that are the goal. Already, China and Hindu India are feeling the impact of the organized venom, which expresses itself in barbaric vio- lence. Not for the first time in histo- ry is the campaign against the Jews serving as a barometer of what the modern barbarians have in store for a largely unsuspecting world. The goal is the same; only the weapons have changed. In the old days, people were murdered by ax and sword and spear. In this century, the barbarians have learned to use explosives and chemical and biologi- cal weapons. It will come as no sur- prise to learn that they already have access to nuclear devices. Naive government leaders and diplomats, as well as idealistic humanitarians, refuse to recognize and understand the larger threat. To them, this is only a matter of defus- ing domestic terrorism. They see only the scattered, individual con- flicts and believe that these can be solved by local defenses or by conces- sions. How many more major catastro- phes must the world suffer before there is an awakening to the true menace it faces? May such awakening not come too late. I-11 2002 39
