To FAIL OUR FRIENDS IS TO ENCOURAGE OUR ENEMIES We have all been chastened by the events of recent months. Israeli civilians are being murdered almost daily while the support of presumed friends withers under pressure. Anti-Semitism is slowly but surely being restored to a position of respectability - in the high councils of Europe and on American campuses. This is no time for Jews to withhold support from those whose friendship has been tested under fire and proven worthy. To fail our friends is to encourage our enemies. Congressman Joe Knollenberg has been a stalwart friend of Israel and the Jewish community throughout his 10 years in Congress. His firm voice has been heard in undiluted support of the Israeli position. The respected Almanac of American Politics credits him with using his position on the Appropriations Committee to accelerate and add $60 million in vital appropriations for refugee resettlement in Israel. At this critical hour we must transcend partisanship. We must not fail our proven friends. We respectfully urge you to vote to re-elect Congressman Joe Knollenberg. RACHEL POMERANCE Jewish Telegraphic Agency are pretty slim unless someone comes forward with a tip," said Jim Mattheis, public information officer for the Tacoma police. This isn't the first time Beth El has been a target. In fact, the synagogue "has had the most activity of any insti- tution in the five-state region that I cover," said Brian Goldberg, director of the Anti-Defamation League's Pacific Northwest region. Goldberg listed seven attacks against Beth El in the last two years, which have escalated from threatening phone calls and vandalism to an arson attempt — shortly after Sept. 11 — and the spring shooting. The Pacific Northwest has the high- est concentration of extremist groups in the country, and several white supremacist groups are based in Tacoma, Goldberg said. Tacoma has a Jewish population of 2,000. There also have . been several recent incidents in the region involving New York City ince Tacoma police stated Oct. 28 that the suspects in the notorious Washington, D.C., sniper case have been linked to a May shooting at Temple Beth El in Tacoma, Wash., the 350- family synagogue has been inundated with calls from the media. The response from the congregation and the local Jewish community is a mixture of relief — that the case may bring closure — and shock. Two bullets were fired into the syna- gogue between May 1-4. One lodged in an outside wall, while the second tore through the wall, crossed a meet- ing room and flew into the chapel. It penetrated the door of the ark and landed in the back of the ark, but missed the synagogue's Torah scrolls. When Rabbi.
