In 1942, he won a national talent contest, which was broadcast on the Fred Allen show. He then joined the Army Air Force, Special Services Division, during World War II. Having earned a master's degree in education, Mr. Kasander taught speech and broadcasting at Wayne state University from 1946-1950.
