These same prin- ciples in the world of children with dis- abilities happened with other, typical children," she says. Doing everything for a child actually restricts him, Rainey says, instead of building his self-confidence. That's where Jazz comes in. In her books, Rainey has Jazz (who comes complete with a rainbow-colored tail in the illustrations) help guide chil- dren as they learn, with parental support always there, to use their own abilities. Jazz "allows children to work through and solve problems on their own" — and that is what makes him distinctly different from other popular children's figures, like Barney or the Sesame Street characters. DreamDog and DreamKids is "a child-empowerment theory," Rainey explains. "The message is: You can do anything." Writing comes easy for Rainey. "A story literally just pops out of me," she says. "I'll sit down and write it from beginning to end." Rainey also does research for her work, reading "literally thousands of children's books" and texts by child psy- chologists. Then she'll test out her ideas on her children. Once, she began singing "You can fly, if you try," in the car. Jared called out, "Oh, that's nice, Mommy, record that!" (It's now on a CD). She'll try things out with children in her sons' play groups, as well. "My world is my testing ground," she says. Rainey says she has received more than 100 e-mails from parents and care- givers who say that her books and tapes have changed their children's lives. "One woman told me about her 4- year-old daughter, who was constantly being picked on by bullies," Rainey recalls. The mother was miserable. What could she possibly do to help her little girl? Then, as Rainey relates, one day the girl came home and announced, "They can say whatever they want. I like me just the way I am. I believe in me. Look at Jazz. "She has a rainbow tail and that's really different, but she still likes her- self." "A 4-year-old, telling off bullies and quoting Jazz!" Rainey said, laughing. "It doesn't get any better than that." ❑ For information on Jazz the DreamDog and DreamDog Kids, visit the Web site: www.dreamclog.com • State-of-the-artbody & paint equipment • Factory trained & certified technicians • Certified & direct repair for most major insurance companies BIG WINTER SAVINGS '` ef,' c7.4 5 FREE Courtesy Car with Repairs Over $ 10 00 ‘., Must present coupon.
