• Sol Panush of Farmington Hills, a
retired inventor and color manager at
BASF, checks in with one modern book,
The Splice of Moments (1stBooks Library;
$37.50), and the fictional Israel-David
King/Berenice Last Queen (1stBooks
Library; $28.95).
Of the latter, a reviewer has written,
"Based on exhaustive research of biblical
literature, this book expands the legend
of the romance between King David and
Batsheva. The second half of the book
introduces us to Queen Berenice in her
historical setting involving the Roman
Emperors, Vespasian and Titus."
• Bob Schwartz of Huntington
Woods writes a column on running
that is published in more than 15
magazines. His book I Run, Therefore I
Am Nuts (Human Kinetics; $15.95) is
a collection of humorous short essays
on running that has already sold more
than 15,000 copies.
An attorney when he's not writing or
running, Schwartz says runners have a
particular sense of humor: "They have a
certain pride that they're not couch
potatoes, that they get out in January
and February for a 10-mile run, and
challenge themselves to do crazy things."
• As an accountant working for big
corporations, Magda Selmeci of
Ontario, Canada, says she saw first-
hand corporate greed and unethical
corporate behavior. In a fiction book
based on truth, There and Then, Here
and Now (Benchmark Publishing;
$17.95), she follows four Jews who
keep in touch after the Holocaust.
A survivor herself, Selmeci says, "We
[Jewish survivors] are people pushed
to the extremes. Some were affected in
negative ways and we have to deal
with those, too."
• While looking for her Jewish roots,
Karen Tintori learned her grandfather
had survived the worst coal-mining fire
in the country in the early 1900s. Tintori
has traveled around the country dis-
cussing her book, Trapped: The 1909
Cherry Mine Disaster (Atria Books; $25).
"Earlier this year, there were seven
miners miraculously saved after being
stuck in a coal mine in Pennsylvania
for 72 hours. But 279 of my miners,"
she says fondly of the men she studied
for 10 years, "were buried for a week,
and 20 came out alive.
"The book is a story of courage,
cowardice, and love," adds Tintori,
president of Congregation Shaarey
Zedek's sisterhood. "I find that women
love the book as much as men."
