paprika. (You may also spray the top
lightly with cooking spray).
Bake until the top is brown and crisp.

As you sit down and enjoy this favorite; I
know you will think of Nana and how
often she served this with one extra ingredi-
ent — love!"

NANA'S ROAST CHICKEN

Submitted by Winnie Krieger
10 pieces of chicken (breasts, drum-
sticks, thighs, wings)
2 onions, finely chopped (or package
of frozen chopped onions)
2 cups water
Paprika, garlic powder, salt and pep-
per (or seasoned salt instead)
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
Wash and pat dry the chicken,
removing excess fat. Season it with the
salt and pepper. Place the pieces in a
large roaster.
Place the onions in a medium
saucepan and pour water over to cover.
Sprinkle with the paprika, garlic powder,
salt and pepper (or seasoned salt).
Bring to a boil and simmer for several
minutes until the liquid begins to
brown. Pour this mixture over the chick-
en.
Place the chicken pieces in a roasting
pan and roast in the oven until they are
well browned. Baste often with the
juices in the pan. A small amount of
water or chicken broth may be added to
the pan if it gets too dry on the bottom.
(Nana cooked her chicken for hours,
but it will probably be done in 2 hours.
Raise temperature a bit at the end if the
chicken isn't looking brown enough, but
save the gravy!!)
Note: Many have tried to duplicate this
simple recipe; few are able to boast that
they achieved the wonderfidflavor she pro-
duced' So ... the challenge is on!

Century Novelty

) Spock Shock

Leonard Nimoy, the ultra-
rational "Mr. Spock" in the
1960s TV series Star Trek, is
stirring Jewish passions with his
new book Shekhina, a
collection of black-and-white
photographs of women, many
naked but for prayer shawls
and teffilin. The storm erupted
after Nimoy embarked on a
nine-month, 26-city promo-
tional tour of Jewish book fairs,
JCCs and synagogues.

) Mitzvah Money

Moshe Baruch Maiman of
Mequon, Wisc., has a notion
of charity that's reaching nearly
epic proportions. For his
September bar mitzvah, he
asked that people give money
to Israel rather than give him
gifts. To date, he has raised
more than $85,000.
