French word coeur or "heart."
Courage remains true to its origins.
Waber's book is one written straight
from the heart — for the heart.
Reached in his Long Island, N.Y.,
home, Waber spoke with the Jewish
News about his latest book, and what
it means to be courageous — especial-
ly in this post-Sept. 11 world.

JN: Why a book about courage at
this juncture in time?
BW: For a number of years, I have
been jotting down thoughts and
observations about courage.
Not just the kinds of courage
featured in headlines, but also
life's general challenges from
infancy — such as beginning
to walk, tying one's shoes,
starting school and so on.
Although I had begun writ-
ing Courage long before Sept.
11, that tragic day was so
deeply affecting and so defin-
ing of courage for us all it
influenced the book's inclu-
sion of fire fighters and a
police officer.
All of us are called upon at
various times in our lives to
bring whatever courageous
feelings we have to the fore. I
think children, especially, have
to be courageous nearly every
day — whether it's facing a
test or being the new kid and
having to make friends or being bul-
warmth and humor. To promote the
