W

est Bloomfield High School
was probably the safest
place in the. world Friday,
Oct. 18, the day of the annual home-
coming football game.
So concluded several parents who
volunteered at the school in the wake
of threats found scrawled on a park
bench near WBHS.
The threats, which specified that
day for an attack on the school, had
been found the previous weekend by
a group of West Bloomfield students,
said district spokesma'n Steve Wasko.
"As with all issues of student safety,
we sent home a note that Monday so
that families could make their own
individual decisions as to whether to
send their children to school that
day," Wasko said. "For students who
chose to stay away, there was no
penalty."
Attendance was down about 40
percent, Wasko said.
Because it was the day of home-
coming, the school had scheduled
only three academic periods, along
with a pep assembly and parade.
About 100 parents, wearing hastily
prepared T-shirtS as uniforms, volun-
tarily patrolled the school's halls.
Sharona Shapiro, who volunteered
from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., said the stu-
dents took the situation very seriously
and seemed appreciative of the par-
ents' efforts.
"The administration was full-front
out, and the West Bloomfield police
were phenomenal — friendly and
thorough," Shapiro said. A police
spokesperson said the department was
still investigating the threat, which
included the words, "pulling a
Columbine."
"We were extra eyes and ears," said
parent Ann Rosenberg. "It wasn't
really necessary, but it gave the kids a
security blanket, a comfort zone.
"If it [the threat] was a joke, it was
a very bad joke that cost.the school
district thousands of dollars that
could have been better spent educat-
ing children."
By the afternoon's pep rally, the
mood of the school was back to nor-
mal, Wasko said.
And the football game?
West Bloomfield came from behind
to beat Southfield, 38-21.
