Weinberg, a gemologist who went
to Oakland Community College and
spent a year in Israel, felt a little mes-
merized seeing herself on the big
screen.
"People have told the four of us that
there is a family resemblance, and
maybe that was part of being chosen,"
Weinberg says. "When I first saw the
one scene we're all in, I really focused
on myself. The whole thing was awe-
some. "
The Hermelin sisters, daughters of
Doreen Hermelin of Bingham Farms
and the late David Hermelin, have
worked in the entertainment indus-
try before.
Although being in front of the
camera was new to Julie Hermelin
Frank, the production experience was
not. She is a director on MTV's Tough
Enough 3, a reality show that follows
young body builders as they train to
become wrestling stars.

Director Christian Charles and pro-
ducer Gary Streiner trail Seinfeld
with a couple of handheld digital
video cameras as the funnyman chal-
lenges himself to move beyond his
tried-and-true shtick, dumping his
old act in favor of fresh material.
Seinfeld put up his own money for
the movie; Miramax ended up buying
the rights.
There's no doubt that going
onstage requires courage and confi-
dence, and Seinfeld reveals himself to
be, at heart, just another guy trying
to make people laugh. Like comedi-
ans great and small, sometimes he
succeeds, sometimes he fails, and he
knows that trial-and-error is the best
way to build an act worthy of the
high ticket prices he commands.
Seinfeld was predicated on the idea

"I thought of Punch-Drunk Love as a
great opportunity to watch another
director at work," says Julie Hermelin
Frank, 35, who attended Hillel Day
School and Cranbrook before studying
theater and film at Sarah Lawrence
College and New York University. "I
think Paul has a very unique style, and
I got more of an understanding of
what it means to be directed."
While Julie Hermelin Frank is
involved with her first TV series, she
has done production work on music
videos, such as Spirit of 73: Rock for
Choice, a compilation of female bands
asserting the pro-choice agenda.
Married to Mitchell Frank, who pro-
motes concerts, this TV director also
has planned Chanukah parties to raise
funds for Jewish causes.
Karen Hermelin Borman, married to
former Detroiter and film producer
Mark Borman, also knows about pro-
duction. She has done marketing for

Cinema. A graduate of Southfield-
Lathrup High School, she studied act-
ing at New York University and did
graduate work in business at Yale.
"Punch-Drunk Love was really a lot
of fun for me," says Karen Hermelin
Borman, 40, who has two preschoolers
and volunteers in a literacy program
sponsored by the National Jewish
Coalition for literacy. "If only it was
always that easy!"
Filming Punch Drunk Love is about
to make family films a little easier,
especially at the regular Shabbat din-
ners planned by Spector. She used her
earnings to buy a digital video camera
for strictly at-home productions.
