W

hen Ella Baker views the stunning floral
surroundings she created around her
home, she finds it difficult to believe that
just three years ago she worried that her
gardening days were over.
When the time arrived for Baker, 78, to leave her
home in Detroit and move into the Lillian and Samuel
Hechtman Jewish Apartments in West Bloomfield, "she
was sad at the prospect of not being able to continue her
favorite hobby — working in her flower garden," says
Esther Winer, community outreach coordinator for West
Bloomfield-based Jewish. Apartments and Services,
administrator of Hechtman Apartments.
"So Ella devised her own plan and began planting
flowers and some vegetable plants behind her apartment
and all around the trees and any bare ground she could
find," Winer says. Before too long, Baker had personally
put in over 400 plants.
While Baker says she's glad for the cooperation she
received from Hechtman administration to allow her to
continue her hobby and stay productive, Winer sees
Baker's neighbors as being the lucky ones.
"She not only beautified the grounds behind her own
apartment, but added to the enjoyment of other resi-
dents and visitors by sharing her gardens with them,"
Winer says. 0
