To 'I Want Proof'

he pro-Israel community united this
past week to rally against the "Second
National Student Conference on the
Palestine Solidarity Movement," held
Oct. 12-14 at the University of Michigan in
Ann Arbor.
Organizers of the conference want American
universities to divest their financial and academic
associations with Israel.
But at a pro-Israel counter-rally, signs lifted
high read, "Divestment is based on hate."
With team coverage beginning on page 20,
Jewish News Special Writer Don Cohen reports
on the conference's pro-Palestinian speakers,
both Arab and Jew.
Cohen and JNSpecial Writer Karen Schwartz,
a U-M student from West Bloomfield, also
chronicle several pro-Israel counter-rallies. In
addition, JN Student Intern Adam Gardin, a
high school senior at the Jewish Academy of
Metropolitan Detroit in West Bloomfield, gives
his personal account of a pro-Israel rally he
attended with 100 classmates.
Another sign held aloft reflected the consensus
of the pro-Israel protesters: "We offered peace,
they gave war."
