RENAH SHNAIDER, 73, former Detroiter of Oakland, Calif, died Sept. 1, 2002. She received her bachelor of arts degree and a master's degree in rehabilitation counseling from Wayne State University. Ms. Shnaider was then recruited by the state of California and relocated to Los Angeles and then to Oakland. She served the state as a rehab counselor and later as a disability evaluation analyst. While at WSU, Ms. Shnaider was one of the first students there to use a wheelchair; she successfully petitioned the school to install curb ramps on campus. While working at the Oakland State Building, she convinced _ authorities to make restrooms and more parking areas accessible to dis- abled staff and clients. She served as the official representative from the Department of Disabled to Sacramerito on behalf of disabled state employees. Ms. Shnaider was an advocate and educator on the late effects of polio and founded and coordinated the first two Bay-area post-polio support groups as well as the first post-polio clinic in the country. Among her many commendations were a resolution from the California State Assembly for her service to the people of California, a JC Penny Golden Rule award in recognition of volunteer service, a California Association of Physically Handicapped Award of Appreciation for organizing a post-polio conference and a certificate of appreciation for leadership from the steering committee of the 1991 post- polio conference. Ms. Shnaider is survived by her sis- ter-in-law, Charlotte Shnaider; nephews, David and Daniel Shnaider, Eric Milnes and their families; niece, Erin Milnes. She was the daughter of the late Avrohom and Mania Shnaider; sister of the late Borah Shnaider. A memorial was held at Temple Sinai in Oakland.
