Dick Schaap The late Dick Schaap died last December at age 67 after hip-replace- ment surgery. The highly respected sportscaster and journalist is credited with making the Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation's (MJSF) annual Hank Greenberg Memorial Golf & Tennis Invitational a tremendous suc- cess. Schaap got involved through Greenberg's son, Steve, who was an associate commis- sioner of Major League Baseball. According to MJSF Executive Director Steven Simons, "Dick spent so many June days at Tam 0' Shanter [for the Greenberg tournament] that some people there thought he was a member. For 11 years, he served as Dick Schaap the honorary co- chairman. "His devotion to the event, his ingness to impose on his celebrity friends to attend and his genial warmth and friendliness to all who attended has unquestionably been the single most important factor in our success." The tournament has raised more than $100,000 each year for the Hank Greenberg Oncology Fund at the Detroit Medical Center. Writer Mitch Albom, in his introduc- tion to Schaap's autobiography, wrote: "He has walked with kings, ridden shot- gun with legends, dined with the power elite and gotten drunk with some of the biggest sports stars of our time. "And what he comes away with is not a swelled head, an inflated sense of his own importance, or a need to lecture the world with an opinion much richer than ours. What he comes away with are stories." ❑ The Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame induction dinner will be held Monday, Nov. 4, at Congregation Shaarey Zedek Southfield Cocktail hour begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner and the awards ceremony from 7-9 p.m. Tickets are $150 for adults, $36 for ages 17 and yourer..
