Adam Michael Shiffman will be called
to the Torah on Saturday, Oct. 12, at
Adat Shalom
Synagogue. He is
the son of Lisa and
Gary Shiffman and
brother of Matthew
and Alex. Proud
grandmothers are
Lois Shiffman and
Evelyn Kasle.
Excited great-
grandmother is
Helen Kanat. Adam is also the grand-
son of the late Milton Shiffman and
the late Walter Hoffman and the
great-grandson of the late Rose and
Joseph Gold, the late Florence
Shiffman-Hermelin, the late Irving
Hermelin and the late Sol Kanat.
Adam is an eighth-grade honor stu-
dent at Hillel Day School of
Metropolitan Detroit in Farmington
Hills and enjoys just about everything
in life. For the last year, he has become
involved with the Friendship Circle,
having made a special friend named
Sam, whom he is looking forward to
seeing again this fall.
Jacob William Smith .(Ydakov Ze'ev)
of West Bloomfield will be called to
the Torah as a bar mitzvah at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek
Southfield on
Saturday, Oct. 12.
He is the son of
Sara and Ronald
Smith and brother
of Harry Connor
Smith. His proud
grandparents are
Joan Goldberg of
Grand Rapids and
Judith and Gordon Smith of Beverly
Hills. He is also the grandson of the
late Harry Goldberg. Jacob will be
honored by the presence of his great-
grandmother Frieda Smith of
Southfield.
Jacob is an eighth-grade honor stu-
dent at Orchard Lake Middle School
in West Bloomfield. He enjoys base-
ball, skateboarding, cycling, playing
video games with his brother and
spending summers at Tamarack
Camps. Through helping his father
research his family history, Jacob dis-
covered he is the seventh-great-grand-
son of David Branham of Virginia and
the sixth-great-grandson of Sgt. John
Pember of Connecticut, both of
whom served in the Revolutionary
War. Jacob's mitzvah projects included
performing volunteer work as a tutor
at his middle school and helping at
Shaarey Zedek's Camp Betman.

Gillian Emma Wener will be called to
the Torah on Saturday, Oct. 12, at
Adat Shalom
Synagogue. She is
the daughter of
Alexandra and
Joseph Wener and
older sister of
Matthew. Her lov-
ing grandparents
are Eleanor and
Moe Weisberg and
Rae and Martin
Wener, all of Montreal, Canada.
Gillian is an eighth-grade honor stu-
dent at Abbott Middle School in West
Bloomfield. She enjoys theater, read-
ing, horseback riding and art. She
loves spending her summers at
Tamarack Camps. Her mitzvah proj-
ects included working on the
Hadassah rummage sale and partici-
pating in several activities with
Farmington Hills-based JARC, includ-
ing the Purim parcel delivery program.
Gillian completed the 13 mitzvot pro-
gram at Adat Shalom.
Awesome job! Your fan club has grown by 200. You kept our guests
(young, old, and in-between) dancing and happy! When you assured
me that you would take care of everything, and not to worry, YOU

Antonio, Texas. They are the sons of
former Detroiters Leslie and Sidney
Karmia. Proud grandmothers are Irene
Gedanke and Salim
