LETTERS In Jerusalem all Rachel needs is a hug to feel safe. LETTERS from page 6 , But that's not enough for her mother. In Israel, every day is filled with fear for mothers like Rachel's. But thanks to Jewish National Fund, comfort is at hand. JNF constructs security roads so children can travel to school shielded from those who would do them harm. JNF-built parks allow families to gather safely and enjoy simple pleasures. Please help us continue our life-saving work. Because in Israel, Rachel and her mother need more than a hug to feel safe. They need our help. To donate, call JNF at 1-888-JNF-0099 or visit us at www.jnf.org . Our carefully crafted mission state- ment with the word "Jewish" is proud- ly proclaimed on large signs in our lob- bies, on the back of our business cards, in our annual report and on all other appropriate materials, including the referenced invitation to the Jay Leno fund-raiser for JVS. People who attended [the fund-rais- er] heard Dennis Bernard, an event co- chair, speak about the fact that we are a Jewish organization; watched a video that included this information; read our mission statement, and saw ads in the program guide that listed three of our programs with "Jewish" clearly proclaimed. It is interesting that the letter writer, and probably others in the community, assumed that the name change related to the "J" and never gave any thought to the appropriateness of the "V". We know how much JVS does for our community, and we are proud of our reputation as a well-run, dynamic Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit constituent agency that meets the increasingly complex needs of our community Stacey Crane chair, board of trustees Barbara Nurenberg president and CEO JVS Southfield Senior Program A Real Mitzvah I want to publicly thank Temple Israel for the planning of the Sept. 15 pro- gram to take seniors to visit the ceme- teries of their choice ("Volunteers Help Elderly Visit 'Graves Of Our Ancestors,'" Sept. 27, page 60). Being ill after the death of my hus- band, I was unable to go for a number of years. The transportation, flowers, stones and sandwiches they prepared for us were unbelievable. They had maps and directions for everything. I think they gave a real mitzvah. My heart was filled with joy and sadness. Temple Israel is to be commended • for the many activities they plan for seniors. Eva Sadoff West Bloomfield
