Before the event, many of the patrons mingled with Leno on the mezzanine of the Fox Theatre. He was accessible and friendly posing for photos with guests. "We're faced with many budget cuts, and we wanted to do something special for our 60th anniversary" said Stacey Crane, JVS chairman. JVS, which originally began as a Jewish organization, helps people meet life chal- lenges through support services. "JVS is a hidden treasure and people discover it when they need a job," said Carmen Harlen, WDIV- TV4 anchor. Co-chair Dennis Bernard wel- corned and addressed the crowd also. "We will serve 22,000 people with dignity and compas- sion," he added. Leno made a surprise appearance before his scheduled performance while co-chair Nate Forbes read the raffle winners. Leno burst on stage accusing Forbes of being bor- ing and then proceeded to read the winners adding some excite- ment to the event. The scheduled performance opened with Christopher and Side Kicks, who entertained the crowd with life size puppets followed by Leno's lively performance. And his last line was no joke: "God Bless Israel." — Carla Schwartz Eisenberg Shayna Silverman, Stacey Crane and Michael Crane Peter Joelson, Karen Rockind • Dennis and Nancy Gershenson a 1.
