according to published reports,
plans to write a book on his recent
travails.
Taubman is only the third person
to have been on the Forbes 400 list
while serving a jail sentence; finan-
cier Michael Milken and hotelier
Leona Helmsley preceded him.
Milken, who is Jewish, has become
a prominent philanthropist since
his release.

mer metro

Americans.

Ballmer,

Steven Ballmer
executive
of
Microsoft
since 1998,
retained the
No. 10
position
this year.
But his net
worth is
now $11.9
billion,
down from
last year's
$15.1 bil-
lion.
Ballmer,
Eli-Broad
who lives
in
Redmond,
Wash., is No. 15 on the Forbes
world's richest people list. His boss,
Microsoft founder William H.
("Bill”) Gates III, held on to his
spot as the nation's richest man
with a net worth of $43 billion.
The other former Detroiter is Eli
Broad, 69, founder of homebuilder
Kaufman & Broad (now KB Home)
and insurer Sun America. He
dropped three positions from last
year's compilation of richest
Americans to finish at No. 29.
Broad, who lives in Brentwood,
Calif., is No. 51 on the world's
richest people list.
Broad saw his net worth drop to
$4.8 billion from last year's $5.5
billion. One reason may be some of
his recent philanthropic gifts. He
made a $400 million pledge to edu-
cation and gave $25 million for the
new biotech center at California
Institute of Technology. ❑
