Hebrew Literacy
Classes To Begin

The Adat Shalom Synagogue Men's
Club will sponsor Hebrew literacy
classes for men and women. The
opening registration and kick-off
evening will be Monday, Oct. 14.
The program is designed to teach
the alephbet and towork on siddur
skills' and reading fluency. Both begin-
ning and intermediate levels will be
offered.
The Monday classes will meet from
7:30-9 p.m. They will be taught by
trained laypersons under the direction
of the Adat Shalom clergy. There is a
$30 materials fee for Adat Shalom
members and a $40 charge for all oth-
ers.

Rabbi Daniel Nevins and Rabbi
Herbert Yoskowitz will lead three
Sunday morning discussions at Adat
Shalom Synagogue on "Three Trials
That Rocked the Jewish World." The
programs are set for 10 a.m. Sunday,
Oct. 13, 20, 27.
On Oct. 13, Rabbi Yoskowitz will
talk about the two famous trials of
Captain Alfred Dreyfus resulting from
the explosive Dreyfus affair in France
and their effect on French Jewry
today.
On the following Sunday, Rabbi
Nevins will discuss the Schwartzbard
trial of 1927 in which the young
"Jewish vigilante of Paris" was acquit-
ted for the murder of a Ukranian
nationalist who led pogroms that took
the lives of many Jewish villagers.
The series will conclude on Oct.
27 with a presentation by Rabbi
Yoskowitz on the Beilis blood libel tri-
als. These trials, which began in 1913,
involved a Jew who was accused in
Kiev of the murder of a Christian boy
for ritual purposes.
The Adat Shalom Sisterhood and
Men's Club are planning brunches at
9:30 on those mornings by advance
registration only There is a $6 charge
for brunch. There is no charge to
attend the programs.

Guild Seeking
Young Composers

The Guild of Temple Musicians
announces the 2003 Young
Composers Award competition
to encourage young Jewish
composers to create composi-
tions which will enhance Jewish
liturgy as well as deepen the
religious experiences of congre-
gations.
This year's competition is
open to any Jewish musician
born on or after Jan. 1, 1968,
who is at least 18 by the- dead-
line for submission of entries.
For 2003, the composition
should be .a multi-movement
work of up to 10 minutes dura-
tion for children's choir, for
unison plus simple two-part or
even three-part writing, accom-
panied by piano or organ. One
additional instrument may be
included at the discretion of the
composer, as long as the piece
may be performed with or with-
out it. The text(s) may be
drawn from Shabbat or holiday
liturgy, the Bible, Jewish com-
mentary or Jewish poetry, or
any combination or part of the
foregoing, providing a common
literary idea is present.
Prizes for the winning corn-
position include a cash award of
$1,800 plus performance and
publication opportunities.
Transportation and accommo-
dation within North America
will be provided so that the
winner may attend the premiere
of the prize-winning work:
Composition entries must be
postmarked no later than Jan.
9, 2003, and sent to Ben
Steinberg, chairman of the
Young Composers Award com-
mittee. There is no required
entrance fee.
