BLOOMFIELD from page 31 leader Adolf Hitler. Noted historian Bernard Lewis said: "The Arabs have made Nazi-style anti-Semitism offi- cial throughout the Arab world." The Egyptians will accept no criti- cism and refuse to discuss the prob- lem. President Hosni Mubarak •stonewalls critics and gets away with it. No administration has been will- ing to squeeze him. While members of Congress make noble speeches and even confront Mubarak about the rampant, state-sanctioned anti- Semitism heavily documented by ADL, the Middle East Media Research Institute and others, Mubarak knows they won't do any- thing about it. That's because the State Department and the Israeli Embassy will intercede on Egypt's behalf, saying yes, they know he's terrible, but the relationship is too important to risk offending him. The Saudis won't speak to the Israelis. Instead, they say, "Go make peace with the Palestinians, the Syrians and the Lebanese, and then maybe we'll talk to you." An Israeli expert on the Arab world explained, "They're too scared of their own people and that the intifada (uprising) will spill over into their streets." The fear factor domi- nates much of the Arab world, where autocratic regimes are often unpopu- lar and nervous. "Most of the Gulf countries have no interest in our issues," added the Israeli expert, "but they're small and they're scared of the street, so. they're careful not to say anything nice." Even Jordan, the best of the lot, can be problematic. "They defend peace with us in a negative way. They tell their people it's a way to protect the Palestinians and to pre- vent us from driving the Palestinians into Jordan. They're not saying we have peace because it's intrinsically good, but in order to prevent all kinds of Israeli designs and plots," the Israeli specialist said. But the specialist had very high praise for Jordanian help behind the scenes on border security, fighting terrorism and defending peace. The Egyptian government daily A1 Akhbar has called President Bush "an American bin Laden," labeled his vice president, defense secretary and national security adviser "the axis of evil" and said the president's support for Israel violates the U.S. cBloo Constitution. The Saudi defense minister, sec- ond in line to the throne and father of the ambassador to Washington, said American criticism of the king- dom is orchestrated by "congressmen wearing Jewish yarmulkes." These are messages from countries that the Jordanian foreign minister told his Washington audience are prepared to make peace with Israel. If they truly are ready, they have a strange way of showing it. It will be difficult to take Arab leaders serious- ly until they have the courage to speak directly with Israel, end the vilification and incitement against Jews and the Jewish state, and, most of all, have the courage to say to their own people what they say here in Washington. eman 11 11 11 1 11 11 111 1 11 1 1- r, But his involvement, and genuine interest throughout the extensive job is one of the things that impressed the Werners most.
