Holocaust Center
Explores Altruism

In concert with its upcoming
International Institute of the
Righteous now under construction
in Farmington Hills, the West
Bloomfield-based Holocaust
Memorial Center announces its
inaugural Academic Conference on
Altruism.
The day-long event will begin
8:30 a.m. Sunday,
Oct. 13, at Yeshivat
Akiva, 21000 W.
12 Mile Road, in
Southfield.
The conference is
aimed at pursuing
righteousness in
the world today
while examining its
psychology, history Rabbi Charles
and meaning. A
Rosenzveig
group of scholars
from throughout
the U.S. will present papers previ-
ously not published that define the
motivation for selfless acts.
The altruism conference aims to
identify elements common to such
acts and to find the means of per-
petuating laudable behavior.
Holocaust Memorial Center
President Alan Zekelman and Rabbi
Charles Rosenzveig, HMC founder
and executive director, will welcome
participants.
Defining and outlining the con-
ference's structure will be Dr. Guy
Stern, the HMC's academic advisory
committee chair. He is Wayne State
University's Distinguished Professor
of Germanic Studies and a professor
of comparative literature. Dr. Stern
serves as a consultant to the U.S.
Holocaust Memorial Museum in
Washington, D.C.
Among the academicians who will
speak are Professors Kristen
Renwick Monroe, University of
California, Irvine; Klaus Berghahn,
University of Wisconsin, Madison;
David Weinberg, WSU, Detroit;
Elazar Barkan, Claremont Graduate
University, Claremont, Calif.; John
Hartman, U-M; Melvin Small,
WSU; and Dr. Eva Fogelman, City
University of New York.
The conference site is barrier free.
