get answers to their personal caregiver
questions. Detroit Public Television is
setting up a team of volunteer health
experts to speak with callers.
The experts will be from Wayne
State University's Institute of
Gerontology, Hospice of Michigan,
Visiting Nurses Association and the
Chronic Illness Coalition. The num-
ber to call will appear on the televi-
sion screen during the broadcast.

And Thou Shalt Honor..., providing
professional insights, shows some
innovative residential care ideas and
offers suggestions from medical, reli-
gious and social service consultants.
"I think we need to educate people
and raise the level of debate and dis-
cussion," says Wiland, who made the
film Being Old and Being Young in
New York City as one of his earliest
projects initiated by the United Jewish
Appeal. "If we start talking, we can get
communities more involved."
A book that goes along with the
program, And Thou Shalt Honor: The
Caregiver's Companion, provides a
resource for the estimated 30 million
men and women currently providing
care for loved ones.
Edited by Beth Witrogen McLeod,
who has written other pieces on the
subject, the text provides action plans
for care-giving tasks, checklists to
assess care needs, places to go for
information and advice for the care-
givers' own care.
"Many of the fenders for our pro-
gram are Jewish, and I think providing
care for our elders is an inherent part
of the Jewish upbringing," says
Wiland, co-founder and former CEO
of a firm developing educational mul-
timedia software.
"I think the film and the materials
can be helpful to families, particularly
the ones just starting as caregivers." ❑
