His take on the metro Detroit social scene: "When it comes to going out, Ferndale is an up-and-coming area and Birmingham is a more laid-back, nice atmosphere." Some of his favorite in West Bloomfield. "I've made a lot of friends there," said the Michigan State University graduate and elementary school teacher. Taub and her boyfriend like to go out for coffee or dinner with friends. Some of their favorite restau- rants include Champps and J. Alexander's, both in West Bloomfield. They also spend time in Royal Oak and Birmingham. And, once in .a while they catch a movie at the AMC Theatres in Livonia because it still gives stu- dent discounts. "Saturday night is our night to go out, either alone or with friends," said Leslie. "Friday night is more of a family night, where we go out with Sam and other families or our-own families. But on Saturday night it's just us — no kids." Saturday night plans for this Huntington Woods couple include dinner and possibly a movie. Sometimes, they utilize the babysitter and run a quick errand before their evening plans. As for their favorite spots, they like to try new restaurants. • Adam Scheinfield, 23, says his typical weekend evening out with friends could include going out for dinner in Royal Oak or Birmingham, followed by any combination of the following: seeing a movie, hanging out in a coffee shop or going to one of the local bars. Some of his favorites are Dick O'Dow's in Birmingham; Bosco and Woodward Avenue Brewers, both in Ferndale; Midtown Cafe in Birmingham; and Old Shillelagh in Detroit. Scheinfield, who is working on an MBA at Wayne State University, also enjoys other activities such as going to plays, walking around downtown near the Detroit River and eating at riverfront restaurants. While going to the bars is a good weekend activity, Docks, who clerked for a federal judge this summer, said his favorite summer weekday activities included playing baseball, going to the movies and taking advantage of the lakes with water skiing and tubing. Bars and restaurants are closer together and open later in Atlanta, but Docks is partial to the metro Detroit social scene. "It's exciting to be around here," he said. He and his friends spend a lot of time in Birmingham, but they also go to the movies, visit the bar occasionally, particularly Roosevelts in Farmington Hills, and frequent sport- ing events. More than 200 athletes with special needs participate in the games.
