The hilarious whodunit that lets the audience take a stab at catching the killed THE CENTURY CLUB RESTAURANT Antler 1,k ethics-day killed. If the attack had come from the air, Israel wouldn't have lost anybody. The number of civilian casualties suf- fered by the Palestinians is less than in any comparable war in history. Many Palestinians have been killed, but by other Palestinians and Jordanians. The Jordanian government under King Hussein killed 20,000 Palestinians in one month. Israel, in its 55-year fight against the Palestinians, has killed a tiny fraction of that 20,000 number. No country has ever been more sen- sitive to civilian casualties, and yet Israel is criticized more roundly by the United Nations than anybody. JN: What have been the most com- mon questions you've had since writ- ing this book and how have you answered them? AD:The question I get most suggests that terrorism is caused by frustration and disenfranchisement, and my answer is absolutely not. The Jews didn't engage in terrorism against innocent civilians during the Second World War, and can you imag- ine any group more frustrated? The Cambodians didn't. The Rwandans didn't. The root cause of terrorism is that it works. It works successfully, and it con- tinues when it I/Yorks. For example, today's newspaper has a big story on how the Basques in Spain have tried terrorism. The Spanish government said, "We're not letting you do it, and your party is thrown out of Parliament; you've been punished for using terrorism." If the international community had responded to the Palestinians the way the Spanish government responded to the Basques, there'd be no Palestinian terrorism. JN: Who do you associate with aiding terrorism? AD:I think the main culprits here are the European community, the Vatican, American liberal churches and some university academics who have reward- ed Arafat for his terrorism. If Pope Pius XII was called Hitler's pope, this pope is Arafat's pope. He has embraced him seven times, more than any other national leader. He is constantly talking about moral equiva- lents between murdering little babies and Israel's and America's self defense. Can you imagine this pope embrac- ing an abortionist? He would never do it. But Arafat he does. There's some- thing immoral about that. JN: What are some of your continu- ing recommendations in the fight against terrorism? AD:I think the first thing we can do is be very critical of the European coun- tries, our churches and even in some instances of our synagogues for being too accepting. During the time when many American Jews had this flirtation with Yasser Arafat — hugged him and kissed him — I refused to participate. Arafat's a murderer. Although I have to represent mur- derers as a lawyer, I don't have to hug them. I think we ought to be very crit- ical of the European response to ter- rorism and very open about our [response to] terrorism. JN: Has the threat of terrorism had, any effect on your. religious practices or the way you go about your daily routine? AD:I have been advised by the author- ities that I'm a potential target, and I therefore have increased my own per- sonal security. When I speak, I have armed security with me because I am 'a lightening rod. I've been twice subjected to potential terrorism. I have changed my conduct to pro- tect myself and my loved ones, but I certainly would never stay away from a synagogue for fear of terrorism. What I would do is make sure that the syna- gogue is adequately protected and • secured. I think that's the job of the city and the country, not the Jewish communi- ty alone, and they've been doing a pretty good job of it. In fact, my son and I went to Russia 10 years ago when there was a threat of an attack on a synagogue there. We brought television cameras and the media to help protect the Jews of Russia against terrorism. ❑ :Stu tclay ldcly (313) 963-9800 • 333 MADISON AVE.
