BILL CARROLL Special to the Jewish News IV ith the cancellation of his highly acclaimed television show, Politically Incorrect, comedian Bill Maher has returned to his professional 'roots" — standup comedy. He's doing one-nighters in such places as Skokie, Ill.; Tacoma, Wash.; Agoura Hills, Calif.; and, now, Clinton Township, Mich. The latter is the home of the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts — the beautiful theater with the long drive time to Hall (M-59) and Garfield roads. Maher will open the center's new season Friday, Oct. 4. Running through the end of April, the 2002 2003 schedule features 63 events, ranging from singer Engelbert Humperdinck and - Bill Maher: "His mother is Jewish and he's 100 _percent one of us — a strong advocate of Israel," says West Bloomfield attorney Debbie Schlussel, a frequent guest on "Politically Incorrect." comedian Carrot Top to operas La Boheme and Madame Butterfly and a travel series that includes "Israel: Stories From the Holy Lands" (Nov. 24). Maher, who is Jewish on his moth- er's side and is a strong supporter of Israel, created the irreverent Politically Incorrect in 1993 on cable TV's Comedy Central, bringing together politicians, journalists and entertainers to participate in controversial, topical and comical discussions. Winning four Cable-ACE Awards, Maher and the program grew in popularity each year, catching the attention in 1997 of ABC-TV, and landing in the post- Nightline time slot. The topical talk show was the epit- ome of provocative late-night TV, garnering 18 Emmy Award nomina- tions, but the bubble burst in May for the quick-witted and sharp-tongued Maher.
