RINKE CADILLAC 85 Years And Still Delivering BREAK (S) THROUGH in our chapel, but on Simchat Torah it is in great demand." Newly Written While some Sifrei Torah read in our synagogues today are old and refur- bished, others were written and donat- ed when brand new. "Our newest Torah scroll was complet- ed in 1999," says Rabbi Elliot Pachter of Congregation B'nai Moshe in West Bloomfield "It was a congregational proj- ect to honor our late Torah reader, Abram Rabinovitz." With the final of the 613 com- mandments in the Torah stating that it is a mitzvah for every Jew to write a Torah scroll, or if one is unable, to engage a scribe to do it, many congre- gations or individuals do just that. "When we decided to have a Sefer Torah written in honor of our parents, we thought of the mitzvah," says Simon Kresch of Southfield. Along with his extended family, he dedicated a Torah at the Norma Jean and Edward Meer Jewish Apartments in West Bloomfield in June 2002, in honor of the anniversary of his parents, Molly and Ben Kresch of Southfield. "Since most of us lack the capability to do so, we fulfilled the mitzvah by owning the Torah and placing it on permanent loan to the Meer Apartments," Kresch says. At the Birmingham Bloomfield Chai Center, "the congregation, as a group, had a Torah written, with one member matching the donations made by the others," says Rabbi Yochanan" Poker. "A few years ago, a good chunk of our membership contributed what it cost to have a brand new Torah in our shul," says Ruvi Singal of Southfield, past pres- ident of Young Israel of Oak Park. Synagogue members Frances and Morris Flatt of Oak Park underwrote most of the cost of commissioning a Torah to be written for the congregation. "We had the last paragraph left blank, so members could buy the honor of writing a letter in the Torah," Singal says. "The sofer (scribe) actually held the quill with each person so they were actu- ally writing in the letter themselves." Observing the mitzvah of having a Torah written is a reminder of all the other mitzvot contained in it. It demonstrates that we understand the purpose of our creation — to keep the 'Torah and its commandments. On Simchat Torah, we express grati- tude to God for giving us the gift of the Torah and we remember that no matter where our Sifrei Torah have come from, or how they got to us, it's what's inside them that counts. ❑ THEY'RE BACK!
