She died Dec. 19, 2001, at age 71. Although Ms. Sitorsky passed away almost 10 months ago, the funeral was delayed because the home where she resided had no family contact information. After her death, her body was sent to Perry Funeral Home in Detroit, where it remained until earlier this week. Carl Calfin, a cousin who lives in Ann Arbor, began searching for Ms. Sitorsky sev- eral months ago after the family lost touch with her. He was also the former owner of Lindsay Drug Company, Hayden Drugs and Northland Medical, a member of Ira Kaufman Chapel in Southfield and arranged to have her body interred. "It's a sad story, the way Marilyn was bounced around the system," Calfin said. "It shows us how families are built on the shoulders of many, and some of those shoul- ders have pain." "When we got the call about Marilyn, it was like the answer to a prayer," said Eliz- abeth Adair, an employee of Perry Funeral Home. "We weren't able to bury her because we had no funds." Adair said many unclaimed bodies are sent to Perry because of their refrigeration system. There are no laws governing how long a funeral home must keep a body; each home has its own policy, according to Adair. Ms. Sitorsky, who had developmental dis- abilities, grew up in Detroit. Her parents, Samuel and Clara Sitorsky, passed away in 1968 and 1962, respectively. She attended Cass Technical High School and Wayne State University, where she studied art. Rabbi Harold Loss of Temple Israel offered to con- duct the graveside service. "Whenever there is a situation like this, our community comes together and donates our services to those who need them," said Rabbi Loss. Although Jewish law states that a person should be buried as soon as possible, Rabbi Loss said Ms. Sitorsky's burial still fulfills that commandment because no one had been informed of her death until this week. "By holding Marilyn's funeral now, we are honoring the principle of family and show- ing that we do care," Calfin said. "She's pro- vided us with that opportunity."
