Levitin did not dream of becoming a
ballerina while growing up near Haifa.
She divided her time among many
interests, including ballet, flute and
gymnastics.
"Ballet really grew on me," she says.
"I started when I was 7 and was taking
lessons every day when I was 13. At the
age of 18, I had to join the army for
two years, but I was in a special unit
that left me free time to practice.
Afterward, I joined an Israeli dance
company."
After five years with the Israeli
troupe, she entered an international
dance competition in Paris and won
second place. That encouraged her to
continue with her work and try her
luck in New York City.
In her first week in America, she was •
hired by Ballet Hispanico, where she
worked for five years before joining
Hubbard.
"Ballet Hispanico is a repertory com-
pany that does have a Spanish flavor,
but they do a lot of modern ballet as
well," Levitin says. "I liked working
with them because they also brought a
lot of variety into their choreography."
Levitin recently returned to Israel to
take center stage for the most impor-
tant appearance of her life — her mar-
riage to Yuval Saban. Although the two
are from Israel, they met in Chicago,
where he came to work as an electrical
engineer. She had been on a blind date
with an American win took her to a
barbecue attended by Saban.
"I'm not a religious person, but I
really like my heritage," says Levitin,
active with a group of Illinois-based
Israelis. "When I got married, I wanted
it to be a religious experience, and we
continue to celebrate the holidays."
While Levitin hopes to have many
children, she also wants to keep up
with her career. Besides working from
10 a.m.-6 p.m., she uses daily swim-
ming and periodic gym routines to
remain nimble.
"I want to dance all my life," she
says. "Maybe I'll do some dance thera-
py. I love what I'm doing now."
