ON HIS MARK from page 73

[there] got me involved in communi-
ty theater and asked me to write a
play. I did it and went on from
,
there.
Among his 27 plays, the OBIE
Award-winner When You Conlin' Back,
Red Ryder?, about a 19-year-old
working in a diner in the New
Mexico desert, was staged in Detroit
during the 1970s. His 11 films
include Children of a Lesser God,
about a speech teacher who falls in
love with a beautiful but distant deaf
girl, and Apology, for HBO, which
won an ACE cable award.
Medoff, whose third daughter,
Jessica, is a classical voice student at
the University of Michigan, also
directs films. Children on Their
Birthdays, based on a Truman Capote
story, will be out in October. Coals of
Fire, which he also wrote, is sched-
uled to begin shooting next year.
Medoff2"-a strong Zionist who is
opposed to organized religion and
refuses to say "under God" while
reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, took
a slightly different production assign-
ment as he arranged for a memorial
concert marking Sept. 11. The event,
held at a football stadium near his
home, recognized the diversity in his
area by including performers of dif-
ferent cultural backgrounds.
"I find myself writing more about
diversity," says Medoff, who has writ-
ten many Jewish characters into his
work and has taken productions to
other Jewish theaters. "The movie I'm
getting ready to shoot is half Latino
and half Anglo in its characterization.
"I try to invest each of my charac-
ters with equal affection but not take
sides. I did a play where I set out to
write a character I thought of as evil.
I found him as affecting as the char-
acters who were good." ❑
