One Chasidic tale tells of Rabbi
Chaim of Sanz who, before the holiday,
would gather money for donating to
tzedakah. One year, the story says,
Rabbi Chaim was able to collect a very
great amount of money for tzedakah.
When his guests arrived at Rabbi
Chaim's sukkah, they saw that it was
empty of decorations — yet it had
never looked so beautiful.
The rabbi replied, "There are many
sukkot that are beautifully decorated,
but mine is different. Instead, the beau-
ty you see in my sukkah comes from
giving tzedakah and performing other
mitzvot." Perhaps your family can
make a special donation to tzedakah in
addition to decorating your sukkah.

EDUCATION

• Sew Cool: In 18th-century Italy, fami-
lies might decorate their sukkah walls
with embroidered wall hangings with
holiday themes.
Perhaps someone in your family
could create one for your sukkah?

• It's No Lie: It's fun to tie-dye. This is,
of course, a project that requires the
assistance of an adult. But all that's
needed is dye and a white handkerchief
(or other piece of cloth).
To tie-dye, simply prepare the dye
according to package directions. Then
wrap rubber bands around places on the
fabric that you want to remain white.
Place the cloth in the dye, then rinse
and let dry.
Use the tie-dyed material for place
mats and napkins, or to hang on your
sukkah walls.

• Gold Plated: Bring a touch of ele-
gance to your sukkah. Ask children
to make an old-fashioned "crumber
set," used to sweep crumbs from the
table.
Simply decorate, with markers or
crayons (gold makes it look oh-so-
fancy), a fairly sturdy paper plate.
Then cut it in half. Use the top of
the "crumber" to sweep bits of left-
over food into the bottom half of the
plate. El
