nity day school that became Hillel.
Opened in 1958 with 29 students,
Hillel now has 700.
For Rabbi Yoskowitz, Rabbi Segal
was "a preacher, a teacher and a racon-
teur ... a master of the nuance, who
could enthrall listeners with his elo-
quence."
Adat Shalom President Lawrence
Wolfe of Bloomfield Township hailed
Rabbi Segal as a "leader, educator and
blessing to the community, who was a
real inspiration to everyone he met."

All the speakers related anecdotes of
their contacts with Rabbi Segal, telling
how he struggled to perform his rab-
binical duties after becoming ill —
even placing calls from his hospital bed
to sick congregants who were in other
rooms in the same hospital. The rabbi
enjoyed the small amount of time he
spent in the synagogue's new facility
on Middlebelt Road, and though
determined to give a sermon on Yom
Kippur 1975, he died on the eve of
the holiday.

Rabbi Segal was born in Jerusalem
and came to the United States at age
8. He became the synagogue's rabbi in
1946, when services were conducted at
Bagley Elementary School in north-
west Detroit. The first facility was
built on Curtis Avenue. During his
tenure, congregants rewarded him and
his wife with a trip to Israel in 1956,
then a six-month sabbatical in Israel in
1969.
Nancy Baron of West Bloomfield;
who was visiting Israel at that time,
recalled listening to an animated con-
versation in Hebrew between Rabbi
Segal and Israeli Prirrie Minister David
Ben-Gurion.
Cantor Emeritus Larry Vieder, who
has been with Adat Shalom for 42
years and officiated with nine rabbis,
closed the service with a prayer.
The. Frankels' endowment is part of
a new phase of Adat Shalom's endow-
ment campaign, titled "Jacob's
Legacy."
"Rabbi Segal was an outstanding
individual," Sam Frankel said before
the service. "We provided the endow-
ment to name the social hall after him
so that future generations will remem-
ber him and what he did for Adat
Shalom and the community."
