B'nai Moshe Plans Classes, Lectures Under the rubric of "New Year, New Beginning -- 5763," Congregation B'nai Moshe in West Bloomfield is offering a variety of fall programs for adult Jewish learning, including a number of 10-week courses and a guest lecture series. Classes are held at B'rtai Moshe and open to the community. • The Power of Seven is a seven- month series. Different speakers will teach a self-contained topic on the first Monday of each month. Sessions are 7:30-9 p.m. in the syna- gogue's Bodzin Hall. Tuition is $8 per session,-$45 for the series for B'nai Moshe members; $10 and $60 for others. The series debuts Monday, Oct. 7, with Rabbi Lauren Berkun, JTS Midwest Rabbinic Fellow. Her topic will be "The Meaning of Mikveh for Modern Men and Women." Others: Nov. 4, Conservative Community Scholar-in-Residence Rabbi David Lazar; Dec. 2, commu- nity educator Eric Grossman; Jan. 6, University of Michigan Professor Todd Endelman, "The Jews of Britain;" Feb. 3, community educa- tor Michael Weiss, "Breaking the Bible Codes;" March 3, community educator Aviva Silverman; and April 7, Rabbi Lee Buckman, head of the Jewish Academy of Metropolitan Detroit. Advance registration is encouraged but not required. • B'nai Moshe will welcome Rabbi Lazar back as its scholar-in- residence the weekend of Shabbat Vayaytzay (Nov. 15-17). He will lead a number of in-depth study sessions. Details will be announced closer to the date. • Weekly classes for adults begin the first weekend in October: — New this year, B'nai Moshe will offer an Early-Bird Torah Study Group from 8:45-9:30 a.m. on Shabbat mornings, starting Saturday, Oct. 5. Community educator Barry V. Levine will explore themes of the weekly Torah portion, beginning with Parshat Bereshit and running through the conclusion of the Book of Genesis. Hebrew not required. No charge, but contributions to the Ruth Rosenberg Albert Adult Education Fund (underwriter of the series) are welcome. —Another new study series is Swimming in the Sea of Talmud with Rabbi Elliot Pachter. This class will meet for 10 weeks on Sunday mornings, from 10-11 a.m., in the synagogue library-minyan room beginning Oct. 6. Users of the popular textbook say it makes Talmud study accessible, relevant and enjoyable. Tuition for the 10-week series is $50 for B'nai Moshe members, $75 for others, plus a $20 book fee. Adult learners may also attend on a drop-in, per-session basis at $7 for members, $10 for others (including the materials fee). — Three levels of adult Hebrew reading classes are offered. For total beginners, a 10-week series with Barry Levine runs from 11 a.m.- noon Sundays, starting Oct. 6. The class is offered in cooperation with NJOP-The National Jewish Outreach Project. No charge, but registration required. — Adults with basic phonetic Hebrew reading ability interested in upgrading their skills, may register for Beginning Hebrew Grammar with Dr. Edward M. Golenberg. The 10-week series will meet from 11 a.m.-noon starting Sunday, Oct. 6. This class is a continuation of last - year's NJOP be4inner class. New students may join the group . if the level is right for them. Tuition is $50 for members, $75 for others, plus a fee for the textbook (new stu- dents only). -- Two classes in Advanced Hebrew Text & Grammar will have one section taught by Dr. Golenberg and the other by Nathan Roth.-Both classes will meet from 10-11 a.m. for 10 weeks, starting Sunday, Oct. 6.
