Shared Identity
ith the anniversary of 9-11 still
fresh in our minds, and Israelis
continuing to die in the 23-
month-long Israeli uprising, we embark
tonight on Sukkot, the holiday known as
Z'man Simchateinu, Time of Our Joy.
The drumbeat of hatred spawned by
Islamic militants has put a damper on this
seven-day festival, but we should enjoy our
bounty as a people.
Sukkot reminds us that life is fragile and
temporary, that it's a mitzvah to study
Torah together and be hospitable to one
another.
Amid world turmoil, let us note that
Sukkot teaches that the seamless passage of
our heritage through the generations
requires that we unite behind our modern
and ancient homelands — and in pursuit
of a better world for all.
