Malka Littman, Fay Kruet and
Daphna Feldman: "It's not an
intrusion — it's an embrace."

Hillel teachers was an Israeli soldier
shot nine times while defending
Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity.
He has- no use of his arms.
Anna, a 24-year-old waitress at the
Park Hotel in Netanya, the mother of an
18-month-old son, was paralyzed from
the waist down after the Passover attack.
Another young woman, Kineret, suffered
burns on over 80 percent of her body.
"We had a little trepidation when
we first walked into the hospital room.
We didn't know what to expect,"
Kruet said. "By the second time, they
were all smiles, waiting for us."
Kruet often is asked, "How could
you do it?"
"Bui how could we not do it?," she
always answers. "Just because it's
uncomfortable? Think how uncom-
fortable they are."
Now that they're back in the United
States, the three teachers are on a mis-
sion — to encourage schools, syna-
gogues and organizations to adopt -
Israeli families whose lives have been
shattered by the intifada. The first to
sign up was Hillel Day School.
"This is not a campaign where chil-
dren will go home and ask their par-
ents to write a check," Littman said.
"This- is a way they will get to know
another family."
Adopted families receive letters,
photographs, phone calls, personal
gifts and money channeled through
the international organization.
The best thing would be for more
people to spend time with the victims
in person, said Feldman, who is hop-
ing to return to Israel for Sukkot.
"We can't give up on our family,"
she said. ❑
