Congressman Helps
Jewish Troops

Washington/JTA — A U.S. congress-
man sent supplies to help Jewish per-
sonnel celebrate- Yom Kippur on an
army base in Cuba.
Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y., arranged for
two rabbis and 400 pounds of supplies to
be delivered to Jewish military, CIA and
FBI personnel guarding Al Qaida terror-
ists at the U.S. base in Guantanamo.
Israel heard that at least 40 Jews serv-
ing at the base had no provisions for
Rosh Hashanah so he worked to get the
rabbis, as well as prayer books and
prayer shawls, sent there. He also had
kosher food sent for the break-fast meal.

Survey: 6.1 Million
Jews In The U.S.

Washington/JTA — There are some
6.1 million Jews in the United States,
according to a newly released survey.
The total included unaffiliated Jews,
according to the group that sponsored the
study, the Association of Statisticians of
American Religious Bodies. Researchers
admitted the number of Jews they
reported could be misleading. With the
exception of Jews, who were counted on
the basis of identity, the survey reported
its totals based on religious affiliation.
The largest religious group in the
United States remains the Catholic
Church, with more than 62 million
adherents, the study found. The fastest
growing church during the 1990s was
the Mormon Church.
